PGP/GPG Tutorial and Keysigning Party

In place of a general meeting this week, come learn how to use PGP encryption to communicate securely.

We’ll explain some of the ideas behind PGP, then demonstrate using GnuPG and Enigmail to create a public/private key pair and exchange encrypted email. Finally, we can all sign each other’s keys to expand the so-called “web of trust”.

To participate, please bring:
1. A photo ID. Your Cal Poly ID or driver’s license will do.
2. A computer with Thunderbird installed and configured for your email account: http://www.getthunderbird.com/

IPython Tech Talk

Update: Video and slides

IPython is an interactive computing environment especially for the Python programming language.

In this talk, Dr. Brian Granger will discuss IPython’s features, history, and applications to scientific computing. Dr. Granger is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Cal Poly and a core developer of the IPython project.

Bring your laptop to install and play with IPython yourself after the talk.

Our first general meeting of this quarter (indeed, our first in some years) will be this Thursday, October 17 at 5pm in 14-232B (inside the CSL).

Come with your questions and knowledge about anything Linux-related.

We’ll also discuss upcoming events, and eat pizza (thanks iFixit!).

Finally, we’ll have a bit of meta-planning of future meetings.

Update: UEFI lessons learned

Come have CPLUG install Linux on your computer! We can also troubleshoot any Linux related problems you have, or you can even just show up to hang out.

We will dual boot your machine with Linux Mint (an excellent Linux distribution) so you won’t lose your current OS. We’ll have Linux Mint 15 and Ubuntu 13.04 disks/flash drives on hand, and we can help you install another distribution if you bring your own installation media.

Free Fatte’s pizza will be available, courtesy of our friends at iFixit. They’re hiring for internships!

CPC Spring 2013

Want to prove your programming prowess? The Cal Poly Linux Users Group is pleased to announce our third quarterly programming competition!

The competition will be held on May 11th, this Saturday, in the White Hat Security Lab.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants, and free food will be available for all participants, courtesy of our friends at iFixit! They’re hiring student interns: http://ifixit.com/Info/Jobs

Problems will be similar to those of the ACM-ICPC. Participants of all skill levels are welcome!
