CPLUG’s Week of Welcome Events ’08

WOW starts in about a week, and the Execboard is planning on having strong presence for several events that week. However, we can’t do everything ourselves, so we need help for the following events. Any help (even if just for preparation or set up / tear down) is greatly appreciated. Let’s show the freshmen that Linux nerds know how to represent (stabs self for such an awful phrase).

SLO Bound – Tuesday Sep 16th 12-2:30PM

Freshmen will be walking the steets of San Luis Obispo going to various places of business. I’d like 6-7 people to give out 20 copies of our OpenCD with a flier telling them to visit our booth at the club fair and with the club web site on them. We’ll need help making the CD’s and fliers (probably Friday night or Saturday), and handing them out. You won’t have to be downtown all 2.5 hours, just long enough to hand out your CD’s, although I’d like to space out the people handing them out (2 every 30 minutes) to get a wide spread of discs. Volunteers requested for 30 minute shifts.

CSC Luncheon – Wednesday Sep 17th 11AM-1PM

CSC and SE majors will be introduced to their Faculty, and ACM usually speaks. I say if ACM is there, we should be too. I did this last year, spoke about 1 minutes on the club, and then sat down and talked with freshmen during lunch about the club, the campus, or whatever they wanted. I’d like 2 people to help me out  with this. There’s a free lunch in it for you if you want it.

WOW Block Party – Friday Sep 19th 4-7:30PM
Setup @ 3:00PM / Teardown @ 8:00PM (or maybe earlier)

Looking for people for 1hr+ shifts. Sit down, talk to freshmen about the club, hand out free stuff, good times for all. Bring a laptop if you can, especially if you’re running something cool (compiz fusion, any non-GNOME or KDE desktop, eeePC, OLPC, video production), although I don’t think we’re going to have power (don’t expect it). Bring a chair as well if you’d like to sit, no idea if we’ll have any provided.

Execboard can’t do this alone, please respond with the events/times you can help out so we can make this WOW a success.

Mark Gius

Security Talk Follow Up

We had a great turnout last week at the CPLUG and CreateSpace Holistic Security Talk.

Definition of Holistic : Emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts.

We are still trying to get a digital copy of the notes, but the talk covered security holes and how when creating a system you need to focus on every part of the system. If it is week anywhere then the entire system is flawed.

The talk was given by Mark Smith, the Lead System Admin from CreateSpace.

After the talk Mark led us in a contest to crack a set of unsecured virtual machines. after three hours of attempts, the only person to finish was Mark Gius, our very own Treasurer.

Thanks to Mark Smith and everyone who came out. We are done with meetings for this year, we hope to see you all in the fall.

/Nat

UPDATE:  There were actually 3 persons to finish the tasks, Mark was only the first one.

Holistic Security Talk

There will be a talk on system security tonight, June 5th, at 5pm to 7pm in 22-315 14-301

The first hour will go over the basics of holisitic security, and the second hour we will relocate to 14-301 to practice implementing said security and hacking into a machine with incomplete security.

This meeting is sponsored and given by Dr. Staley’s company CreateSpace.

The flyer is here. (in odt format…)

The talk has been moved to 14-301!

RSA Talk

Tonight in 22-315 at 5pm by Dr. Staley.

Yes it really is in the english bldg this time. In the first hour Staley will talk about the issues with RSA, how it’s used, and how to implement it. The second hour will contain a puzzle where the winner will receive a small prize.

Another Apology and BASH Talk Summary.

We had a very small turn out tonight at our BASH talk. On investigation, we discovered that while we updated most everywhere, we (being me) forgot to update the website with the new date.

Anyway, thanks to those who showed up in 14-255 tonight for Josh’s talk. It was very informative. Here is Josh’s Bash Presentation as a PDF.

Spring Qtr Events

Hey there CPLUG Members, We’ve got some great events coming down the pipe, so It’s time for a big signal burst.

4/19 – Open House
That’s right folks, this Saturday CPLUG will be out in force. We will have two booths, one outside the CSL and one near Eng. IV. Our team at the CSL will be giving tours of the CSC Machine room and doing other nerdy stuff. Our Sun Bound booth will have general assortment of t-shirts for sale, pasty nerds roasting in what will probably be their first time outside in weeks, and lots of machines running everything from Gentoo to Slackware. Come stop by, bug us, pick the minds of your current execboard, and talk to those who want to take our jobs next year.

4/26 – FYM 33
As every quarter, we will be hosting Free Your Machine in the Networks Lab (Bldg 22 Room 124) starting at 10AM. Come get your machine freed and filled with penguiny goodness. If you already have Linux come by and enjoy the nerddom. There will be Pizza.

5/6 – Bash Scripting Talk of Doom Death (Tentative, but appropriate, title)
Josh, aka SillyG, aka President of CPLUG, will be giving a talk on BASH scripting Tuesday May 13th at 7pm in a room to be determined. A lot of us have been waiting for this to happen, so come on by and learn a thing or two.

Till then,
/Nat

Update: Check our facebook group (cplug) for a facebook event, and the room number.

Urban’s Fun Hour

Come on down to building 14 room 301 tonight(Wednesday 2/27/08) at 7pm for what has been heralded as an unofficial meeting. Basically people are getting together and talking. There might be cake, there might be video games, but there will definitely be Linux.

FYM and POU summary

Hey Guys,

Thanks to everyone who showed up to our events this month. If you have any questions feel free to contact us. mgius would also like to say this about getting to know CPLUG:

There are 2 main ways to get active in the club. The first is the Mailing List. Just sign up for announce and cplug and go from there. The second way to hear about events, ask questions, and get to know us is through our IRC channel. We are #cplug on Freenode.net. If you need help setting up IRC we recommend XChat for Linux & Windows. Our mac users reccomend different things, but I’ve heard Colloquy, and if you use Pidgin/Gaim it has (bad) IRC support. For help on setting up IRC check this link.

Hope to see you guys soon at some of our other events or online.

/Nat

On Power of Unix

Sorry this is so late, we will get the info up faster next time, just been busy with school and what not.

One of the things many people have been asking for is the ~/.screenrc file that victor uses. Victor learned about it from this Gentoo page. but the file should contain the following:

# use visual bell
vbell on
# replace ctrl-A by ctrl-O
escape ^Oo
# set a big scrolling buffer
defscrollback 5000
# Set the caption on the bottom line
caption always "%{= kw}%-w%{= BW}%n %t%{-}%+w %-= @%H - %LD %d %LM - %c"

I hope to get the other info up soon, also we need to finish getting the pages ready. It will happen this quarter, I promise.

Look forward to our SSH talk sometime in November.
